Greta Wagle is a New York-based linguist and educator who helped spearhead the Onrust Project, a non-profit public historic research effort in Schenectady, New York. Serving as project director, Mrs. Wagle oversees the entire planning process as well as the execution of the project itself.
The Onrust Project seeks to restore and rediscover the many historic waterways and byways of New York State. These routes were originally used for transportation and trade by Native Americans as well as by European immigrants later in the 17th century and beyond. The Onrust was an historic Dutch vessel that plied these waters and saw great success in its design, speed, and cost efficiency. Onrust Project organizers replicated the entire vessel, constructing a 52-foot yacht based on an original yacht’s design, in order to educate the public about the ship and the waterways in which it travelled.
Organizers hope that by exhibiting the replica, more information will be disseminated regarding New York State’s rich historical background, leading to greater preservation efforts and understanding. More information can be viewed at www.theonrust.com.
