Support for the Onrust Project continues after the ship’s replica christening by project director Greta Wagle at its 400th anniversary kickoff event. A nonprofit organization based in Waterford, New York, the Onrust Project promotes research and education efforts concerning the ancient Onrust ship, and created a full-sized replica for use as a classroom and floating museum. Held on May 16, 2014, the event celebrated the original Onrust’s creation in 1614, when it became the first ship built on American soil using 17th century Dutch shipbuilding techniques.
A spring concert performed by renowned male choir group Mendelssohn Club of Albany served as the kickoff’s centerpiece. The performance included the presentation of the club’s vocal-contest finalists and the queen of the 2014 Albany Tulip Festival, which took place five days prior. The event’s theme of “Water Music” inspired the inclusion of traditional folk music and guest artists the Jamcrackers, including George Ward, to the entertainment programming. In addition, the entrance hall featured an Onrust table with a slideshow on the ship, items for silent auction, and exhibit banners for guest view. The Chancellor’s Hall in Albany, New York, served as the concert site.
Project Onrust plans to use a portion of the proceeds toward operation of the Onrust replica. Since its completion, Greta Wagle has continued to hold educational and charitable events aboard it.
