Greta Wagle, an independent researcher focused on Dutch history, has contributed to several long-term projects related to the translation and identification of Dutch artifacts. For the past 10 years, Greta Wagle has also served as the executive director of the Onrust Project.
Established in 2005, the nonprofit Onrust Project is dedicated to locating unused and forgotten byways from the 17th century to the present throughout New York, whether those are wagon roads, early paved roads, or Native American trails, and building and developing its Onrust replica. Using authentic 17th-century Dutch shipbuilding methods, the Onrust Project continues to complete its exact replica of the first yacht to be built in America, an early research vessel that created some of the first accurate maps of the east coast.
The Onrust replica serves as a floating museum and participates in a number of charitable and educational activities. Shortly after its launch, the Onrust partnered with the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York to help raise money for the food bank and provide 10 auction winners with a day-long trip. During the Waterford Tugboat Festival, the staff gives tours about the ship and Dutch history, before firing the ship's cannons. More recently, the Onrust was the treasure for kids to find at an annual Talk Like a Pirate Day celebration.
